The Competition
MobileWidgetCamp is a one day event focused on Mobile Widgets and we want to inform a large target group on developing your own widget. Although mainly targeted at technical (web and mobile) developers, the commercially interested mobile professionals will be involved as well in the morning session with some keynote speakers. So there is a lot of good information about the subject for everybody.
What is the vision and roadmap on Mobile Widgets? What are the relative advantages compared to downloadable mobile applications, gadgets or mobile sites? What are restrictions? What are key success factors for Mobile Widgets? Who is and will be involved? What are practical cases of Mobile Widgets? How were these cases developed?
In the afternoon you can code your own Mobile Widgets with the option of help by one of the thought leaders in this field.
After May 2nd you can submit your Mobile Widget and a jury will select the ten best widgets and give the winners exposure on the Vodafone website, a new Netbook or 1 year free mobile internet access in The Netherlands and/or other prizes (for exact details please read the Dutch Terms and Conditions ).
What is a Mobile Widget? Essentially, Widgets are the new touchpoint for how users will access the internet on their mobiles. They are mini Web applications that reside on the phone but can be personalised to easily fetch relevant information from the web and present it to the user. They require a device to have a Web Run-Time (WRT) environment which enables them to behave like applications (rich GUI, can be used offline) yet are as easy to code and update as a mobile internet browser site. Consequently, widgets can deliver relevant, ‘always on’ services to users – they are typically based on 1-2 use cases, for instance, a simple weather forecast or an Amazon search feature.
